Under normal circumstances, Shields Valley Gaige Taylor and Manhattan Christian’s Shaphan Hubner would have earned a Klondike bar for their victories in the girls’ 400-meter and boys 800 meter races, but these weren’t normal circumstances on Saturday at Belgrade High School in Belgrade. They probably would have welcomed a warm cup of soup and an electric blanket.
Hail welcomed 25 teams to the Gallatin Valley Invite track meet. Then the sun peeked out for a moment, went back inside, and made room for clouds, wind, rain, and cold.
Welcome to Spring in Montana.
Hubner blazed his way to victory with a record time of 1:57.90, shattering the old meet record held since 2016 (Jacob Grinwis of Belgrade 1:59.18) and qualifying for state (2:02.79 is the state qualifying time) in his first track meet of the season.
Hubner also qualified for state in the 400 meter race (52.14) and finished seventh in the High Jump.
